God’s Provision– Trusting God as a Single Parent

After months of working on the relationship, in March, my ex-husband decided to leave again. Not easy. It was really hard doing everything alone. I cried out to God alot when he left. Not only did we have two children together, but I was also pregnant. We had one on the way. During my prayer time, I asked God how was I going to provide for my family. Since I was pregnant, I would be going on maternity leave soon and bills needed to be paid. How would I afford daycare for the newest addition to the family? These are some of the things I began to ask God during my prayer time. This is what he reminded me:

Man’s definition of provision and God’s definition of provision differ. That’s why it’s important to stay grounded and rooted in God’s word to see what he says about himself. Not what the world says about him. His provision may never be a $500,000 dollar house, but instead making sure you and your family never miss a meal each day. Just like when Moses and the Israelites were in the wilderness on their way to the promise land, he provided manna for them and guided them on their way. The manna he provided was only enough food for that day and would spoil at the end of each day. God wanted his chosen people to completely depend on him the next day for their daily bread.

You may never have excess, but if you are truly believing God to provide for you and your family, then you will always have what you need. In scripture, he says that he cares for the birds and the lillies of the field and we are more important than them, so what makes us think that he won’t take care of us? God is unlike a human, he is perfect in his sovereignty and he cannot lie. His word says that he will never leave us nor forsake us, so we have to believe that God will take care of us. Even if it doesn’t look like what we thought it would look like. Even if it doesn’t look like it’s going to work out.

God cannot lie. Scripture says that God is working all things out for the good of those that love the Lord and are called according to his purpose. If we continue to affirm these biblical truths in our lives while we are are going through the storms, it will help us not only learn that God makes provisions for us, but how he makes provisions for us.

He cares about our children having a roof over their head or never missing a meal. He cares about these things, so why do we assume that he won’t provide if he cares? What are some practical steps to help us trust God with our finances? With our relationships? Friendships? With our scary prayers?

First we must allow ourselves to go into those dark places that God is calling us into. Next, we must confess with our mouth that in all actuality, we don’t really trust God and ask him how he can heal our disbelief. Third, Pray that God will heal the unbelief in our hearts and reveal the parts of us where we could believe and trust God more. Fourth, We should study God’s word and see how time after time, he’s never failed his people.

Repeat those steps, in and out of those difficult and trying seasons. Send out every negative thought that the enemy may implant in your mind to make you think God won’t provide and send it out in the name of Jesus. Affirm God’s love for you and remember that even if you don’t have the best car, biggest house, or jet, remember that God is enough. He will provide all of your needs according to his riches and glory.
